Driving at night is a completely different skill set compared to daytime driving. In Canberra, we have specific challenges like early-morning fog, unlit rural roads, and active wildlife. Mastering night driving is crucial for any learner driver aiming for their full licence.
1. Visibility is Key
Clean your windscreen inside and out. Streaks on the glass can cause blinding glare from oncoming headlights. Also, ensure all your lights headlights, indicators, and brake lights are working perfectly.
2. Watch for Wildlife
Canberra is the "Bush Capital" for a reason. Kangaroos are most active at dawn and dusk. If you're driving near the Parkway or suburban fringes, slow down and scan the road edges constantly.
3. Manage Glare
If an oncoming car has their high beams on, don't look directly at the lights. Instead, look slightly towards the left edge of your lane (the fog line) to maintain your position without being blinded.
When to Use High Beams
In the ACT, you should use high beams on unlit roads to increase your field of vision. However, you must dip them to low beam as soon as an oncoming vehicle is within 200 metres, or when you are following another vehicle within 200 metres.
At KAYA Driving School, we offer specialized night-time lessons to help you get comfortable with these challenges. Our instructors will guide you through the best techniques for managing visibility and staying alert.
