The Ultimate Guide to the CBTA Training Pathway

Understand the Competency Based Training and Assessment process in the ACT.

CBTA Guide

What is CBTA?

The Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) is an alternative to the standard one-off driving test in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It allows learner drivers to progressively build their driving skills and demonstrate competency over a series of lessons with an accredited driving instructor.

At KAYA Driving School, our SDERA certified instructors will guide you through the CBTA logbook system. Rather than feeling the pressure of a single driving test, the CBTA method ensures a relaxed, continuous learning environment where you're assessed dynamically as you learn.

4 Steps to Your P Licence via CBTA

Step 1: Check your eligibility

Ensure you have held your ACT learner licence for at least six months if you are under 25, or three months if you are 25 or older.

Step 2: Complete the required training

Participate in the CBTA program with an accredited KAYA Driving School instructor. This involves demonstrating competency in a variety of driving tasks over multiple lessons.

Step 3: Logbook sign-off

Once all competencies are achieved, your instructor will sign off your logbook, confirming you are ready for your P licence.

Step 4: Visit Access Canberra

Take your completed logbook to an Access Canberra service centre to be issued your provisional driver licence.
